Zithú o Zidhú : “el Diablo” o “la Muerte” entre los otomíes orientales del estado de Hidalgo, México

Abstract

Zithú, “El devorador del nombre”, es identificado por los otomíes orientales del estado de Hidalgo, en México, como “el Diablo”. Sin embargo, tal denominación fue impuesta por los evangelizadores del siglo XVI a todas las deidades de las culturas prehispánicas, ya que, para ellos, el Diablo se había enseñoreado en estas tierras, engañando a sus habitantes para que lo idolatraran, pero se había “disfrazado” de falsos dioses. Entre los otomíes del Valle del Mezquital, la palabra Zithú no existe ni corresponde a la denominación de Diablo, para ellos, sólo existe la palabra Zidhú, “la venerable Muerte”. La similitud fonológica se presta para reflexionar sobre qué deidad fue sustituida y ocultada por la denominación de Diablo impuesta por los religiosos. En este trabajo, se pretende dilucidar, a partir del dato etnográfico, la posible identidad del “Diablo” con alguna de las deidades “antiguas” de herencia prehispánica.

Zithú, "The name devourer", is identified by the eastern Otomi of the state of Hi- dalgo, in Mexico, as "the Devil". However, such a denomination was imposed by the evangelizers of the 16th century on all the deities of pre-Hispanic cultures, since, for them, the Devil had ruled these lands, deceiving its inhabitants to idolize him, but had " disguised” as false gods. Among the Otomi of the Mezquital Valley, the word Zithú does not exist nor does it correspond to the name of Devil, for them, there is only the word Zidhú, "the venerable Death". The phonological similarity lends itself to reflect on what deity was replaced and hidden by the name of Devil imposed by the religious? In this work, it is intended to elucidate, from the ethnographic data, the possible identity of the "Devil" with some of the "old" deities of pre-Hispanic heritage.
