Los gemelos de Guanajuato “unidos de la cabeza” : disertaciones y comentarios de cirujanos novohispanos a fines del siglo XVIII

Abstract

En este trabajo se presenta un estudio de caso centrado en el nacimiento de dos gemelos unidos por la parte superior de la cabeza en la ciudad minera de Guanajuato a finales del siglo XVIII, así como la intervención de cirujanos y médicos que dejaron constancias textuales de sus disecciones anatómicas, no sólo desde la perspectiva médica sino argumentando cuestiones teleológicas en torno a la muerte o el sacramento del bautismo. El documento incluye un retrato de los gemelos siameses, mismo que fue enviado a la Corte española y actualmente se encuentra resguardado en el Archivo General de Indias en Sevilla, España.

This work presents a case study focused on the birth of two twins joined at the top of their head in the mining city of Guanajuato in the late 18th century, as well as the intervention of surgeons and physicians who documented their anatomical dissections, not only from a medical perspective but also arguing teleological issues regarding death or the sacrament of baptism. The document includes a portrait of the Siamese twins, which was sent to the Spanish Court and is currently preserved in the General Archive of the Indies in Seville, Spain.
